40 Years of Celebrating the Lives of Black Women and Black Girls
Lillie P. Allen’s Black & Female: What is the Reality?™ workshop held at Spelman College in 1983 for the First National Conference on Black Women’s Health Issues was a watershed moment for social change. Lillie’s vision began with bringing together Black women and girls to talk about the realities of our lives, envision together, and organize for justice. An inclusive vision, we continued to build, and in 1988, invited women of color and white women to participate in an 18-month training to address the issues that divide across race, gender, class, and power. Be Present, Inc., co-founded in 1992, builds transformative leadership for social justice and is the organization that today houses a global movement of people from all backgrounds. This movement is the result of Lillie’s vision, Black women’s leadership, and our collective work as a diverse network of people with a shared vision of justice for all.
The Be Present for Social Justice Exhibition
The Be Present for Social Justice Exhibition celebrates Black women in leadership and 40 years of Be Present’s work and impact. Part 1, Black & Female, includes photos, recordings, videos, articles, and other materials highlighting Be Present’s beginnings – from the groundbreaking, standing-room only workshops of Black women and girls at Spelman College in 1983 to the creation of the Be Present Empowerment Model® and the founding of an organization and movement for justice. Part 2, We the People, includes multimedia materials that highlight the impact of the Model® in creating a thriving, just world. Part 3, Building Community, focuses on photos and artwork that show partership and community-building moments between 2012 and 2018.
The Exhibition is part of the Be Present Archive project, which is funded by the $5 Million in 5 Years Movement-Building Campaign. All events are free. Between now and November, we invite you to click below to donate $40 or use the "Other" button to make a donation in multiples of $40 in honor the 40th Anniversary of Black & Female: What is the Reality?™
